"Rhapsody of the Soul" is one of the two most important pieces of art that I have ever written or composed. This is music for people who are healing, lost, or suffering from a major loss in their lives. Please share this link with your friends whom you think would benefit from hearing this symphony of sounds and feelings. Thank you for your support. This is the time and the first offering which I have been preparing for.

"It must come. I must suffer." These deterministic lyrics erode our childhood fantasies of the perfect life. However, when the hard grieving sets in and feels like it will never leave, grace and hope can transform our lives. "Veniri Necesse Mihil Pati" reflects the experience of being stuck in despair with no sign of either hope or grace. - Gary Powell

This piece, "I Know My Path, I Do Not Move" from "Rhapsody of the Soul" is about how the past can hold us too tightly. Psychologists teach us that sometimes we create patterns of behavior in order to manage either a singular traumatic event or chronic trauma from earlier in life. But, at some point, when the difficulties are no longer present, our entrenched behavior begins to work against us. Being stuck in our patterns is another way of losing ourselves - losing our highest and best use.

The piece begins musically in the safety of the feminine - the good mother. It is the calm before the storm. The low bass voice intrudes in this reflective place with a warning, "Timens decedende. Timens manendi." Scared to leave. Scared to stay. The feminine is now joined by the masculine with one last shared pleading, "Suavis," where both yearn for the sweet oneness that they know will soon be gone. It only gets worse from here when we adults are faced with difficult decisions and when fear is in the driver's seat.

"Lost in Death" is not the beginning of the hope for healing and resolution. It is the simplicity of being totally and unconsolably lost. At great psychological peril for us as individuals and as a society, the Christian tradition has taught us to skip this step, this grieving. Here in "Rhapsody of the Soul," being lost in death is an important step toward our final healing. Listen to the bell toll - the whistle blow, and be held in the grasp of nothingness.

Within this ballet, "Rhapsody of the Soul," I have found my inspiration from my personal experience and the associated psychological work around it. This is a personal work large enough and broad enough to hold both my life experience and modern psychology together in one thought. Now, it's become musical, danceable, and livable within this one long musical phrase, "Rhapsody of the Soul."
