Laura, to be fair, some film composers certainly do take sole professional credit for the efforts of their staff-composer employees. These composer-employees are compensated by market-driven and sometimes union-driven economies and are certainly there by their own free will. My "dungeoned up" statement is simple hyperbole.

The scale and speed of any musical score for a big film can certainly require many individuals' efforts to complete in what is always a deadline driven business. I'm suggesting that the whole compositional "team" stand up at the award shows to enjoy a share in the fruits of their talent, training and labor.

Thank you for your comment and compliment. -- Gary Powell

Thank you so much for sharing this vital information. I knew that some film composers stole parts of their soundtracks from earlier works, but I did not know they went so far as to take credit for the efforts of their contemporaries! I really like your advice: "Seek out relationships which honor and support your contribution." That is a very important thing for people to remember, whatever field they are in. Do you mind if I write a short blog entry on this and link back to you?
